There are some big waves down at Mavericks right now. Rumor has it that the Mavericks Invitational might happen this weekend.



Compare the size of a presumably six foot person to that wave. This guy is officially braver than my previous hero, the guy who climbed my trees to thin the branches without the benefit of a cherry-picker or safety harness.

A friend recently wrote "Whhhi-chhhhhh" to indicate the sound of a whip cracking. I read it and re-read it and all I could come up with was which or, at best, witch. Then I got to thinking, how the hell do you write the sound of a whip?

Astronomy Picture of the Day

Part of my unique parenting style is to make my kid's homepage NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day. Pretty darned clever actually.

This one struck me as pretty amazing with respect to getting a kid's (or my) attention. You know with the juxtaposition of the analemma and the waterslide; that's cool.

Explanation: If you went outside at exactly the same time every day and took a picture that included the Sun, how would the Sun appear to move? With great planning and effort, such a series of images can be taken. The figure-8 path the Sun follows over the course of a year is called an analemma. With even greater planning and effort, the series can include a total eclipse of the Sun as one of the images. Pictured is such a total solar eclipse analemma or Tutulemma - a term coined by the photographers based on the Turkish word for eclipse. The composite image sequence was recorded from Turkey starting in 2005. The base image for the sequence is from the total phase of a solar eclipse as viewed from Side, Turkey on 2006 March 29. Venus was also visible during totality, toward the lower right.

Urban Legends Gone Wild

Snopes is invaluable. Everyone has one of those friends who sends "crap" that turns out to be patently untrue. Usually, a quick search on snopes puts them in their place. But sometimes, it's true.

Interesting Idea

Are you the prefect typist? Do you ever mispell or just have a different idea of how to type a common-word? If the answer is yes and you sell on EBay, you might have a problem.

If you are an EBay buyer, there might just be an opportunity for you. Fat Fingers allows you to type in a search word then they compute possible mis-spellings and return EBay items that possibly mis-spelled your word.

Chances are you won't have a lot of competition for that spinnaler that you always wanted and might just get a good deal.

HDTV Recommendation

If you have, or just got, a High Definition TV, do yourself a favor and re-watch Nova. The graphics and photographs are incredible, but the real winners are the scientists. These guys obviously primp for the show but they just can't escape the HD lens. Watch this show again, you owe it to your HD tuner.

Neanderthals did.

Apparently, some Neanderthals used sticks to clean their teeth as they have "grooves formed by the passage of a pointed object," according to paleontology professor Juan Luis Asuarga.

This is quite the find as I seem unable to get my 2 year old to brush his teeth despite 63,398 years of evolution over this Neanderthal. Maybe if I get him a stick.
